January Groceries

Posted on
Okay, I’ve been really delinquent about posting my grocery runs, so here’s a rundown of probably a whole month’s worth of shopping.  And to be completely honest, I went a little over-budget in January.  I think this was due to an overzealous Trader Joe’s run, and though most of those groceries will last me for months to come, it was a little oversight in the planning.

  1. Trader Joe's gets us every time. And it sounds like you do much better than we do about skipping the packaged snack foods. I can't seem to bypass the chocolate bars, the pre-made trail mix, or those dark chocolate star cookies with the nonpareils on top…

But how does one make red wine vinegar? I'm curious to do this, as I never drink red wine and have a nearly full bottle sitting around from a failed coq au vin experiment.

  2. That's a good point about TJ's — while I'm not a huge sweet snacker (except for dark chocolate covered pretzels!!), I do get my fair share of savory snacks handed down to me in the form of leftovers from Yarnia parties and knit nights, so they're conveniently already at work for prime snacking time. I probably subconsciously set the Yarnia "party" budget a little higher than needed for that reason 🙂

The red wine vinegar is in trial stages. I read somewhere that as long as you start with another vinegar that has a mother, you can make any kind of vinegar you want. So I actually started with a little starter from my apple cider vinegar (if you use Braggs, or probably another au naturel version from a health food store, you can see the mother floating inside) and added the red wine to that. I'll keep you posted!
